Description

An unusual vintage petrol lighter featuring a cylindrical silver-coloured metal body, removable protective cap and traditional flint-wheel ignition mechanism.

The lighter features a distinctive, compact design with a manually operated striking wheel, exposed wick and removable bottom plug providing access to the fuel reservoir.

Interestingly, the bottom plug is stamped NASMINT, a name associated with an early 20th-century medicinal snuff produced by Genatosan Ltd, with historical records dating back to 1924.

This raises the possibility that the lighter was handmade or converted from an original NASMINT container, although its exact age, manufacturer and origins remain unknown.

A particularly interesting and unusual piece for collectors of vintage petrol lighters and historical curiosities.

Condition

Presented in good vintage condition for its apparent age, showing signs of previous use including surface scratches, tarnishing, discolouration and general wear to the metal finish.

The flint-wheel mounting has previously been re-soldered into position, restoring the operation of the striking mechanism.

The lighter has been tested and successfully ignited, although the mechanism can be temperamental and may occasionally require several attempts to light.

Both the removable protective cap and bottom plug are present and fit correctly.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

Important Buyer Information

  • Tested and working, although ignition is intermittent.
  • Previous solder repair to the flint-wheel mounting.
  • Supplied without lighter fluid.
  • Exact age, manufacturer and original purpose remain unconfirmed.
  • Due to its age and condition, sold primarily as a collectible rather than an everyday lighter.

A fascinating and characterful vintage lighter with an unusual construction and intriguing history, making it a distinctive addition to any collection.
